Our Comprehenive Guide on Cork

You might recognize this material most for its use in capping your wine bottle, however cork has wide-reaching uses. These uses can range from commercial to industrial to DIY design.

WHAT IS CORK?

Cork is a solid material made up of the bark tissue from the Cork Oak Tree. Often sold in solid sheets, corks elastic qualities make it a popular material. Its elasticity and ability to compress mean that after strong compression the material will return to its original shape. This along with its insulating qualities makes it a useful material in industrial fields. Although valued for its practical qualities, cork is also valued for its aesthetic appeal, and so used in design and fashion.

WHY USE CORK?

Corks versatility is due to the variety of useful qualities it has. Among these qualities are:

  • Impermeable to liquids and gases
  • Highly durable and resistant to friction
  • Buoyant
  • Elastic – this allows it to be compressed yet always return to its original shape
  • Fire Retardant
  • Insulating qualities against sound and heat
  • High tensile strength
  • Easy handling
  • Lightweight

APPLICATIONS

Industrial applications of cork can vary widely, but it is often favored for its insulating and shock-absorbing qualities. Some of these industrial uses include anti-vibration insulation, floor underlayment, gaskets, insulation, anti-slip purposes, shock absorption, and in packaging of fragile goods. Cork is even used in more high-tech industries, and has been seen in spacecraft heatshields and bearings.

As a crafting material, the potential for cork is endless. Some simple crafting projects include DIY bulletin boards, mouse pads, desk mats, wall tiles, bathroom mats, photo frames, and DIY magnets or keychains. Cork is becoming increasingly popular in interior design as it is not only durable and fashionable, but hypoallergenic as well due to its impermeability to dust.

Some other unexpected applications for cork include shoe insoles, fashion design, and as a fastening material in woodwind instruments.
